It was a Saturday night and my husband and I were sitting at home, just the two of us. We had been married for a few years now, but we didn’t have many opportunities to spend time together. He had been working long hours lately and I had been too busy with my own career.
I had an idea. I knew that my husband liked to dance, and I thought that maybe we could take a class together. I did some research and found a local dance studio that offered ballroom lessons. I called them up and made an appointment for us to go check it out.
When we arrived at the studio, we were greeted by the owner, Hirai. She was a tall, slender woman with long black hair and a warm smile. She led us to a room where there were several other couples already taking lessons.
My husband and I were a bit nervous at first. We had never danced together before and we were a little self-conscious. But Hirai was a great teacher. She was patient and encouraging, and she made us feel at ease right away.
We learned a lot in those first few lessons. Hirai taught us the basic steps of the waltz and the foxtrot, and she showed us how to keep our bodies in sync with each other. She was a natural teacher, and she had a way of breaking down complex moves into simple steps that we could understand.
