Ever since her boyfriend started applying for jobs, Yuri couldn’t shake off the feeling that their relationship might suffer because of her lack of prospects. She too had graduated from the same prestigious university as him, but while he seemed destined for success, she struggled to find employment in her field. Feeling increasingly desperate, she decided to attend a career fair hosted by her old school. There, she caught sight of a familiar face: an alumni male employee from a prominent company. With butterflies in her stomach, she approached him hesitantly, introducing herself as a recent graduate seeking job opportunities.

To her surprise, the man seemed genuinely interested in her resume and offered to connect her with someone from HR at his firm. Yuri thanked him profusely, feeling grateful for this unexpected break. Over the next few weeks, they kept in touch via email and phone, discussing various aspects of the industry and exchanging tips on how to navigate the competitive job market. Soon enough, Yuri landed an interview with the very same company where the alumnus worked. Excited beyond measure, she called her boyfriend to share the news, only to be met with a chilly response.

Apparently, the boyfriend had also applied for a position at the same company, which he had failed to mention to Yuri. Now she realized why her meetings with the alumnus always seemed a bit too friendly, a little too intimate… It turns out that the two men had already crossed paths during the recruitment process, each vying for the same coveted role. Yuri felt betrayed and humiliated, wondering whether her boyfriend truly cared about her or just saw her as a pawn in his career aspirations. Meanwhile, the OB employee continued to shower her with compliments and encouragement, promising to pull strings on her behalf.
