As soon as Mr. Ishibashi called our design office, I knew something was wrong. The tone of his voice was serious, and there was an undeniable hint of frustration in every word he spoke. My heart sank as I listened intently, trying to decipher what could have possibly gone wrong with one of our projects for his company. But before I could even respond, Mr. Ishibashi hung up the phone, leaving me bewildered and worried.
I tried calling him back, but all lines were busy. Time passed, and still no answer from Mr. Ishibashi. I began to fear the worst – had we made a fatal mistake? Had we missed some crucial detail in his project briefing? As the hours ticked by, my anxiety grew until finally, at around 4 pm, my wife, Reiko, walked into the office looking frazzled and flustered.
“What happened?” I asked her, sensing something amiss. She hesitated, then took a deep breath before confessing that she had been sent to deliver an apology to Mr. Ishibashi earlier today on my behalf. “But why didn’t you tell me?” I protested. “He wouldn’t take my calls,” she explained sheepishly. “So I thought it best to handle things myself.”
My first instinct was anger: how dare my own wife make decisions without consulting me! But then I remembered the circumstances – I had actually promised Mr. Ishibashi that I would come see him personally, but unforeseen events had left me unable to keep that promise. In retrospect, perhaps sending Reiko wasn’t such a bad idea after all…
Reiko proceeded to fill me in on the details of her meeting with Mr. Ishibashi. Apparently, he had received our designs and found them lacking in several critical areas. He had been extremely disappointed, both in us and in himself for entrusting us with this project in the first place. And yet, despite his initial irritation, he hadn’t completely lost faith in us. Instead, he had graciously agreed to give us another chance, provided we could correct our mistakes promptly.
