Etsuko and her brother-in-law had a very strained relationship. It was clear that her brother-in-law did not approve of her and that caused a lot of tension between them. Every time they met, he would come up with something to complain about that had either escaped his wife or children. As much as she tried to avoid him, Etsuko was always forced to see him at family gatherings and it was always a very uncomfortable experience.

It was even worse when her husband was around. He would always get drunk and make a fool out of himself, much to the embarrassment of Etsuko. It was during their third wedding anniversary that things got out of hand. Her brother-in-law had come over to their house for dinner and as usual, he had a lot to say. But this time, her husband was not there to defend her. Etsuko had to face her brother-in-law alone and it was not easy.

It was clear that her brother-in-law was trying to undermine her and her relationship with her husband. Etsuko was heartbroken by the fact that her own family did not support her. She tried to hold back her tears but she couldn’t help but feel hurt and betrayed. As she sat there, listening to her brother-in-law’s complaints, Etsuko couldn’t help but think about how she had to deal with this for the rest of her life.
